Eluveitie (CH) - Originally formed by mastermind Chrigel Glanzmann in Winter 2002/2003 as a mere studio project, the first MCD "Vên" was recorded in spring 2003 - already unique in it's way of having folkmusic on an equal footing with the metal sound. The self-financed MCD was ardently received by scene and press and sold out within a few months. In 2004 Eluveitie signed to the Dutch label Fear Dark Records, which released a re-mastered (and partly re-recorded) version of "Vên", and continued as a "real" band, playing gigs together with bands such as Finntroll, Amon Amarth, Korpiklaani, Ensiferum and many others while touring Europe and playing many festivals & openairs. Although some line-up changes still had to happen, Eluveitie grew into being a band and developed their very own style. In late 2005 Eluveitie was finally ready to enter the studio again and record their first full-lenght album "Spirit", which was again released through Fear Dark Records. Furthermore a videoclip for the Song "Of Fire, Wind & Wisdom" was produced in Summer 2006, directed by Martin Schäppi, Merlin Sutter & Chrigel Glanzmann / Eluveitie. With "Spirit" Eluveitie went a big step forward, presenting a completely new style of Folk Metal to the scene - starting a new wave of Folk Metal! While the album was turning out to be a huge success, the band toured their asses off again. Yet whilst touring and playing many festivals like the Graspop Metal Meeting (Belgium) or Summerbreeze Open Air (Germany), Eluveitie already began to work on new material for the succesive album. Finally in Fall 2007 the new album "Slania" was recorded in different studios in Sweden, Switzerland & Liechtenstein, produced, mixed & mastered by Jens Bogren (Amon Amarth, Opeth & more) at the Fascination Street Studios in Orebrö/SE (www.fascinationstreet.se). Having recorded nothing less than the perfection of their very own style, Eluveitie now was in the lucky Situation to receive many offers from almost every known label in metal music & ended up signing with the well-known German record company Nuclear Blast Records, where a new home was found under perfect conditions.... After some talks & the production of a new videoclip (again produced & directed by Merlin Sutter & Martin Schäppi) a release date was set for february 2008. “Slania” turned out to become a breakthrough (chart entries in Switzerland: #35 and Germany: #72) and the band was getting busy taking over the world in 2008 - with appearances at most of the bigger european summer festivals as well as two USA/Canada tours and three European tours within only 12 (!) months. But never being lazy, Eluveitie worked out new material while touring and was ready to enter the studio again in December 2008! Their follow-up album to “Slania” should become something special - for it is the bands first purely acoustic album (and part I of a two-pieced acoustic concept). “Evocation I - the arcane dominion” was released in April 2009 and turned out to become a real gem of folkmusic and again became a huge success (#20 in the swiss album charts). More tours all over Europe & North America followed as well as their first show in Russia. Now, after three full length albums and over 250 shows in over 30 countries, Eluvetie is ready to conquer the rest of the world & unleash their latest Masterpiece: When the first ten years of the new millenium have passed, Chrigel and his gang will present the perfect ELUVEITIE album. It has everything their fans and not-yet-fans are asking for: fascinating ancient melodies and stories, bonebreaking, heavy but still danceable death metal and huge choruses that will appeal to all kind of metalheads. „Everything Remains“ simply continues where „Slania“ left off taking the bands fresh and unique sound to the next higher level. And this album of course demanded the best treatment there is, so the band hired an army of legends to put the finishing touches to this masterpiece of folk metal: Tommy Vetterli (Kreator, Coroner, a.o.) to engineer and co-produce the album, Colin Richardson (Slipknot, Machine Head, Behemoth, Trivium, a.o.) to mix it and John Davis (U2, Led Zeppelin, Kaiser Chiefs, Arctic Monkeys, a.o.) for mastering duties.
Avian (US) - Guitarist Yan Leviathan, who had been in several local bands over the years, but never anything remotely serious, formed Avian (pronounced A-VEE-YEN) in November of 2002 after being inspired by a metal festival that featured performances by Gamma Ray, Blind Guardian, Edguy, and a number of other fantastic bands. Feeling extremely inspired, on the flight back home, Yan decided to concentrate all of his attention and efforts to creating a band that combined all of the best elements of the great European metal bands and the classic U.S. metal bands. As soon as he arrived home, Yan essentially locked himself in his studio and began writing songs. Before long, he had a couple of songs completed and began looking around for the right studio in which to record them in. Yan eventually ended up in a studio named The Saltmine, which is located in Phoenix, Arizona. While speaking with the owner, Don Salter, Yan had mentioned to him that he was looking for a bass player and a drummer to help him with the recording. Don mentioned to Yan that he was a good friend of David Ellefsons (ex-Megadeth, F5) and that he would ask him if he would be interested in the project. Obviously, Yan was very excited at the possibility of working with such a well-known and highly respected musician such as David. A couple of days later, a meeting was arranged between Yan and David. In the meeting, Yan explained to David what his goal was and David seemed interested. The meeting ended with David receiving a very rough demo of one of the songs and it was agreed that he would listen to it and decide if he would like to commit to the project. A couple more days passed and David called Yan and told him that he really liked the song (Final Frontier) and that they should record it ASAP. It was also agreed that David would produce the sessions in addition to playing bass on the songs. The following week, Yan, and David, along with a session drummer, met in the studio and recorded the song during a 10-hour session. At the end of a very long day, the guys realized that they had created something pretty special and that they needed to record another song right away. Yan played David a new song he had written (Queen of the Insane) which excited David very much. The two agreed that they would meet again in a couple of weeks to record it. This process, which began in December of 2002, continued through September 2003; every few weeks, the guys would get together in the studio and record a song, sometimes two. During that time, Yan and David had many discussions on who should sing on the songs. During one of those discussions, David had mentioned the name, Lance King. After listening to some of Lances work with previous bands, most notably, Balance of Power, the two immediately realized that Lance would be a perfect fit for Avian. David contacted Lance and explained to him what he and Yan were doing. Lance seemed interested and was sent two songs to record vocals on. When Yan and David heard Lances vocals over the songs, they were blown away and immediately asked Lance if he would do all of the songs. Since Lance and David had previously discussed working together at some point in the future, this seemed like the perfect opportunity to do so and Lance signed on to do all of the vocals on the album. At that point, what had begun as a demo project for Yan, escalated within a few short months into a major recording production with world-class musicians on board. By early 2004, the majority of the songs were recorded and ready for mixing. It was then decided between the three guys that a keyboard player should be brought on to add some atmosphere to the album. Lance suggested his Pyramaze band mate Jonah Weingarten. Yan spoke with Jonah on the phone and the two agreed that Jonah would fly out to Yan's home studio (Yanmonster Studio) to record the keys. The two locked themselves away for 7 straight days working 15 hours each day and managed to write and record all of the parts within that time span. All that remained as far as recording was concerned, was the guitar solos. A number of specialists were considered, some even auditioned but none really stood out. Lance mentioned his good friend Roger Moore. The two were together in a band called Gemini, which achieved moderate success in the mid nineties. As soon as the guys heard Roger play, they knew he was their man. Roger worked on his solos at Lances home studio (Nightmare Studio) during the second half of 2004. Around that time, the guys had to decide on who would mix the album. Lance suggested to Yan and David that perhaps he should do it since he had prior experience working on the Balance of Power albums. Yan and David agreed to let Lance have a shot at it and realized t hey had made a very wise decision as soon as they received some of the initial mixes back from Lance. The following months (late 2004 Summer 2005) were spent on putting the finishing touches on the album and getting it ready for release. This process entailed, mixing, mastering (which was done by famed producer Tommy Hansen most recognized for his work with Helloween), overdubs, artwork (created by Mattias Noren), and last and surely not least, finding a record label. For this process, Yan hired a management firm. As soon as a mastered cd was available, the management guys went to work. The album generated a lot of interest by some very well know record labels. Ultimately, Avian signed on with Massacre Records for the European release, Nightmare Records, for U.S., and Hot Rockin for Japan. The name Avian was chosen by Yan from his favorite novel; The Rama series by Arthur C. Clarke. In the series, the Avian is a bird like creature with great intelligence and compassion. The debut cd, From The Depths of Time, is a concept album dealing with the end of days and a warning to mankind that there are guardians out there watching us: From The Depths of Time they're rising, fearing none they march ahead, through the past and into forever, they're the ones approaching with the storm. Musically Avian is a nice blend of old school heavy metal (think Iron Maiden!) and the power metal / true metal of nowadays (such as Hammerfall, Edguy and the likes plus the classic US metal bands like Savatage and Megadeth). Strong songwriting, great guitar / keyboard parts and brilliant vocals are displayed on the 13 tracks (14 in Japan). With "From The Depths Of Time" now available world wide, the heavy metal scene for sure hasn't stopped bringing great bands to the world of music - Avian being one of the very best. On May 12, 2006, Avian performed live for the very first time as direct support to Gamma Ray in Minneapolis, Minnesota USA. The show was a resounding success and the band played a few more shows that year highlighted by a performance with Twisted Sister in December. The beginning of 2007 saw the band hard at work on the follow up to From The Depths Of Time. The band put the final touches on the demo versions of the new songs and began recording their 2nd album, Ashes And Madness in the summer of 2007. By this time, Yan Leviathan had moved to Minnesota so that the band could rehearse together on a regular basis, this opened the door for more live opportunities and the band played with established bands such as Edguy, Kamelot, Sonata Arctica, and others in 2007. Additionally, a new, refined lineup was now in place consisting of Lance on vocals, Yan on guitars, new comers Jerry Babcock on drums and young guitar wiz Bill Hudson on lead guitar. This new lineup elevated Avian to a whole other level and was greeted by fans with very positive feedback and fantastic reviews. In the spring of 2008, the band took a break from recording and headed to Florida to co-headline the Nightmare Metal Festival in Tampa Bay. The band tried out a few new songs and they were well received by the crowd. This excited the band and they were very much looking forward to returning home and resuming work on Ashes And Madness. By the end of summer, the second album was complete and it was announced that the album would be released worldwide on September 16, 2008. The band’s hard work was rewarded with very good sales upon release that were fueled by outstanding reviews from the metal magazines and fans alike. The guys were very pleased by this and realized that their hard work had paid off by the fact that people were enjoying the album. Mattias Noren was once again enlisted to do the artwork, and as usual he did not disappoint! It was very difficult to top the artwork he had created for the first album, but somehow he managed to outdo himself once again. In the fall of 2008, Brian Hollenbeck joined the band as their new bassist and backup vocalist and not long after, Steve Stine joined as lead guitarist replacing Bill Hudson who had joined Circle II Circle. Two very powerful weapons were added to Avian’s arsenal and the band’s live performances were taken to yet a higher level. Brian’s vocals perfectly complemented Lance’s and with the addition of drummer Jerry Babcock’s low harmonies, the band sounded better than ever live. 2009 saw the band continue to perform as direct support to international bands highlighted by a performance with Primal Fear at the Minnesota Metal Fest. By late 2009, songwriting for the band’s third album was underway and everyone was filled with excitement about the early demo versions of the songs. In May of 2010, the band performed with Hammerfall; this was a very special treat for guitarist Yan Leviathan since he had much admiration and respect for the band and was thrilled to finally share the stage with them. Unfortunately, this would be the final show with Lance King. Lance had decided that he no longer had the time to focus on the band due to family and professional obligations. This was hard on the rest of the guys but after discussing things, they decided to continue on with Brian taking over the vocals. As luck would have it, Brian and Lance have VERY similar voices, which should make for a smooth transition on the next album. In the summer of 2010, the band announced that their 3rd album would be released in early 2011. The band also announced that they would release an EP Single in the fall of 2010 featuring three new songs and a live acoustic version of The Fear, originally recorded on Avian’s debut, From The Depths Of Time. Additionally, Avian announced that they would re-release their now out of print first album in October, which would include 3 bonus tracks that were not available on the original version of the album. From The Depths Of Time Special Edition would be released by the band’s new label home, Blinding Force Recordings.
